Consumer prices fell last month for the first time in almost two years, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Investors reacted to the latest consumer price figures Friday by driving up bond prices and pushing stock prices modestly lower.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day down about 0.4 percent.

Economists had expected consumer prices to fall in April if only because declining energy prices in the wake of the war in Iraq.
